Join us October 16 for a special wine dinner with Father John Wines!

Owner/Winemaker Nicholas Maloney grew up in Sonoma County and founded Father John Winery in 2010, which showcases fine wines from Sonoma, Napa and Mendocino. He named the winery after his grandfather, Reverend John Weaver, a renowned Episcopalian priest. Influenced by his time working in France and inspired by his grandfather, Nicholas set out to make wines that remained true to character, accurately reflecting their origin, much like how his grandfather led an honorable and honest life. Father John works with three vineyards: Comptche, Estate, and Vine Hill Road, all known for Pinot Noir.

The evening will begin with a passed bites reception at 6 pm, followed by a 4-course, seated dinner created by Chefs Hugo and Ruben Ortega. Now a proud Houstonian, Nicholas will join us for the dinner. Come learn about these Californian wines from the owner and winemaker himself!

Reserve your seats today!

It's Chiles en Nogada season at Hugo's!

This is one of Mexico’s – and specifically, the state of Puebla’s – most iconic signature dishes, one our sister restaurant Hugo's has featured for decades throughout walnut and pomegranate season. This year, Chef Hugo Ortega is offering this amazing dish at three of his restaurants - Hugo’s, Caracol and Xochi - for the month of September only!

Stories say that nuns in Hugo’s hometown of Puebla, Mexico created the dish in 1821 for the visiting Mexican Army General Agustin de Iturbide in honor of the Treaty of Cordoba, which gave Mexico its independence. The red pomegranate seeds, green poblano chile and white walnut sauce give this dish the colors of the Mexican flag, which make it very patriotic!

The Chile en Nogada features shredded pork mixed with red and green apples, pears, peaches, plantains, almonds and raisins stuffed into a poblano pepper and topped with savory walnut sauce, garnished with pomegranate seeds and parsley. Cost is $28 plus tax (two peppers, served with white rice).

H Town Restaurant Group recently acknowledged and awarded 30+ employees who are long-time employees of the company. Tracy Lee Vaught and Hugo Ortega recently asked these employees to meet at our restaurant for what the employees thought was going to be a meeting but was, in fact, a casual luncheon ceremony celebrate their decades of hard work and commitment to the company!

“Today, July 19, 2024, is a day of gratitude,” said Vaught. “Gratitude that we are all still here together. Gratitude that Backstreet Cafe, Hugo’s, Caracol, Xochi and Urbe are still serving guests every day. Gratitude that we have all made it through the hurricanes, fires, closures, power outages, renovations, a pandemic, family losses and we are still together. Gratitude for the excellence with which each of you perform your jobs. Today, we celebrate you and your enormous contribution to our group.”

In the room were employees from all five H Town restaurant concepts – some who have worked at more than one or maybe even all of the restaurants! – and have been with the company for anywhere from 10 to 15 and even 25 years or more. Many of the employees have worked their way up in the company, something that Vaught and Ortega are especially proud of and honored to have helped their team members achieve. Each employee was presented with a gold pin designating the number of years of employment with the company.

Several Caracol employees were among those awarded:

Humberto Escamilla - manager/server, 21 years
Aurelia Flores - kitchen prep, 21 years
Adrian Caballero - chef, 17 years
Guadalupe Romero - kitchen prep, 13 years
Jesus Martinez - maintenance, 11 years
Santos Ortega - facilities manager, 22 years

Note: Jorge Aranda, chef at Backstreet Cafe, has been with us 36+ years and is our longest term employee.
